Our Company's History

Colson Printing Company has been in the graphic arts business for forty-five years. The following is a brief history. In 1962, the company started as a simple commercial printing company for a private school. Wally Colson purchased the company and in his first act as new owner and president, moved it to Valdosta, Georgia. In 1969, Colson purchased a larger printing company and took over their location, merging the two businesses. This gave Colson Printing Company additional equipment, a better location and a larger customer base. The company soon became the proud owners of their first large press, an 18"x24" Solna single color and a large Stahl folder. In 1973, growing yet again, a prime corner lot in Valdosta was bought and a 5,000 square foot building erected. A 20"x29" Heidelberg was purchased followed several years later by a new two color 25"x36" Heidelberg press. At this time, Colson Printing Company also installed an automatic letter press and die-cutting equipment.

In 1983, Wendy Colson, the owner's son, began working at the company in the sales department. Recognizing a need for fine art printing in the Southeast, Wendy started printing for artists and publishers. Colson Art Printing now contributes a respectable portion of sales. In 1989, another local competitor was acquired, again increasing equipment and accounts. Several years later, the pre-press department was upgraded with the newest Mac and PC image setting equipment as well as an automatic film processor. 1994 brought a sizeable expansion to Colson Printing Company to house a five color 28"x40" Heidelberg press and a 19"x25" four color perfector Heidelberg press. Also included in the expansion was additional floor space for the art reproduction department. Colson Printing strives to offer the most technologically advanced equipment - most recent purchases include: 1) Sabre Direct-to-Plate, 2) Cambo 4"x5" camera with Schneider Apo-Digitar lenses and a Better Light digital scan back, 3) Xerox Docucolor Digital Printing, 4) Oris color management system using Epson prints profiled to match our presses and digital printing equipment.

Colson Printing Company currently has forty-eight employees with 596 years of total graphic service. The average of 12 1/2 years of service per employee is a true testament to the favorable working conditions Colson Printing has to offer. Personnel can be broken down by department as follows: Management/Supervisors - 4, Clerical - 2, Customer Service and Sales - 9, Graphic Design - 6, Technical Graphic Support - 4, Camera & Digital Photography - 5, Press Operators - 10, Bindery - 6, Finishing/Shipping & Receiving - 2. The current building facility, at its present location since 1973, has a total of 43,000 square feet.
